AI in digital pathology

AI reads tissue slides with quantitative precision, supporting pathologists and improving diagnostic consistency.

When a biopsy is taken, a pathologist examines the tissue under a microscope. Digital pathology turns the slide into a high-resolution image, and AI can then analyse millions of cells to quantify features the human eye can only estimate — grade, margins, receptor status and tumour density.

This does not replace the pathologist; it extends them. AI counts and measures objectively, highlights suspicious regions and flags cases worth a second look — reducing both errors and the burden of highly repetitive work.

What AI measures on a slide

  • Tumour grade and cell density
  • Tumour margins and invasion patterns
  • Receptor status that guides treatment (ER, PR, HER2)
  • The Ki-67 proliferation index and other biomarkers
