How to schedule a mammogram

Arranging your first mammogram is easier than you think. Here is exactly what to do, step by step.

You do not need to be sick to get a mammogram — that is the whole point. Screening mammograms are routine and, in most places, are done at imaging centres, clinics or dedicated screening programmes.

Getting started

  • Ask your doctor for a screening referral and recommended frequency
  • Book an appointment at an accredited imaging centre
  • If possible, pick a day in the week after your period
  • Bring your referral, an ID and any previous breast images

On the day

  • Wear a two-piece outfit — you will undress from the waist up
  • Skip deodorant, powder or cream under your arms
  • Tell the technician about any implants or recent surgery
  • Allow about 30 minutes in total

If your centre offers it, ask about 3D mammography and whether your previous images are available — comparing exams over time noticeably improves accuracy.
