Section overview

Signs and symptoms of breast cancer

Most breast cancers are found by the woman herself, or by screening. Knowing what to look for — and what is normal for you — is your first line of defence.

What is a breast lump?

A breast lump is any area of firmness or swelling in the breast. Finding one is worrying, but the vast majority are not cancer.

Breast pain (mastalgia)

Breast pain is very common and rarely a sign of cancer. Understanding its causes dispels most worries.

Breast cysts

A breast cyst is a fluid-filled sac inside the breast — common, usually harmless and easy to evaluate.

Breast self-examination

Breast self-examination puts you in charge of your own health. It takes five minutes a month and teaches you what “normal” means for you.

Clinical breast examination

A clinical breast exam is a professional check performed by a doctor or nurse. It complements self-exam and is often part of routine screening.

Mammography

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast and the best tool we have for finding cancer early — often before it can be felt.

How to schedule a mammogram

Arranging your first mammogram is easier than you think. Here is exactly what to do, step by step.

Healthy habits that protect your breast health

You cannot control everything, but a few daily habits genuinely lower risk and improve overall wellbeing.
