Stage 4 — metastatic breast cancer

Stage 4 means the cancer has spread to distant organs such as the bones, liver or lungs. It is not curable in the classic sense — but it is very often controllable for years.

At stage 4, breast cancer cells have travelled through the blood or lymphatic system to other parts of the body. The most common sites are the bones, liver and lungs.

Goals of treatment

  • Control and shrink the cancer
  • Relieve symptoms and improve quality of life
  • Maintain functioning and independence
  • Extend life — often by many years

Treatment continues throughout the journey: hormone therapy, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation can be combined in sequence, adapting as the cancer changes. Many people with stage 4 live full, active lives for a decade or more.
