Breast reconstruction

Reconstruction restores the shape of the breast after mastectomy. It is a personal choice with many options — and no wrong answer.

Reconstruction can use your own tissue (flap reconstruction), an implant, or a combination. It can be done immediately with the mastectomy or delayed until later.

The main options

  • Implants: a silicone or saline implant restores shape
  • Autologous flaps: tissue from your abdomen or back
  • Immediate or delayed reconstruction
  • Nipple and areola reconstruction as a finishing step

Reconstruction is entirely optional and deeply personal. Some women choose it; others prefer a flat closure. There is no medical reason to reconstruct — only your own comfort matters.
