Breast cancer risk factors

A risk factor is anything that raises the chance of developing a disease. Some can be changed, others cannot. Knowing which is which helps you act wisely.

Having a risk factor does not mean you will develop breast cancer. Many women with risk factors never develop the disease, and many women who are diagnosed have no obvious risk factor at all.

Risk factors you cannot change

  • Being a woman
  • Growing older — risk rises especially after age 50
  • Inheriting gene changes such as BRCA1 or BRCA2
  • A family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • Having had early periods or a late menopause

Risk factors you can influence

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Staying physically active
  • Limiting alcohol
  • Avoiding tobacco
  • Breastfeeding when you can

Discuss your personal risk with a doctor. Women at higher risk may benefit from earlier or more frequent screening.
