Side effects of treatment & how to manage them

Treatments save lives, but they come with side effects. Knowing what to expect — and how to cope — keeps you in the driver’s seat.

Side effects depend on the treatment, the dose and the person. The golden rule: report symptoms early — most side effects have effective solutions, and the worst mistakes come from suffering in silence.

Common side effects and solutions

  • Fatigue — rest smart, gentle movement helps energy
  • Nausea — anti-nausea drugs given before it starts
  • Hair loss — cooling caps can help; it always grows back
  • Mouth sores — special rinses and soft foods
  • Hot flashes — temperature tricks and sometimes medication
  • Low blood counts — infection precautions and growth factors

Your team has a plan for every one of these. Keep a symptom journal, tell your nurses anything that worries you, and never feel you are “bothering” them — it is their job.
